Alice Duryea, the orphan chosen to star in ‘Alice in Hungerland’, with her adoptive mother, relief worker Florence Spencer Duryea. Fellow Near East Relief Board Member Rabbi Stephen Wise believed that Alice should be raised by a Jewish family. The case was heard in the New York Supreme Court, but Alice ultimately remained with Mrs. Duryea.
